The e Bin of New York City
Project Team Members: April Fame, Anthony Tadina, Sekou Cooke
Firm: Blanket Collaborative
Location: San Francisco, California
Project Summary:
Situated on street corners around New York City, the e-waste bin provides an update to the utility and convenience of bins before its time. The 4th bin is made of two parts: a shell connected to the sidewalk, and a replaceable basin which receives and holds e-waste. When joined, a “plug-in, plug-out” system is created to protect e-waste from the elements and of course, tampering.
The bin’s body, composed of heat molded eco-resin sheets, provides for translucency which exposes the e-waste being generated by day-to-day usage. A key security feature is a magnetic strip embedded within the cavity at the bottom of the basin. This magnet is fundamental in the Degaussing process, which clears personal data from electronic devices. In addition, the shell emulates the US postal mailbox design. When the basin is ready for replacing, a capacity sensor sends a GPS signal to the e-cycling facility. All the essential wiring, along with the rechargeable battery, is housed within the cavity. This also serves to cushion e-waste from the force of impact. To generate the power required, a solar film strip is rooted on top of the basin. Each bin is transported to the e-cycling facility on a specially designed vehicle. The vehicle “unplugs” the full basin and plugs in an empty one with a mechanical arm. This systematic approach prevents further physical impact, as t he path from office-bin-facility is more controlled and protected.
Incentives:
The design of the 4th bin provides the same security and ease of a US postal mailbox. The implementation of the Degaussing process provides assurance that people’s personal data stored in their electronic devices will be wiped clean, once deposited into the bin. The intentional translucency of the bin, is able to tap into the conscience by exposing the amount of e-waste being generated. Intelligent, eco-friendly, and convenient the 4th bin will become a staple of the city, as it will remind people of the necessity to dispose of waste properly, in order to sustain their environment. The logo serves as a reminder of the different waste bins that have been created over the years, which has allowed them the responsibility to respect their environment.
